A Registered Dietician

Question: Who do doctors refer those seeking weight loss or healthy diets to?

That's right... Registered Dieticians!

How does a dietician differ from nutritionists, a doctor, or others in the weight loss when it comes to diet advice?

Nutritionists/Counselors need not have any formal training in the United States. You may find a nutritionist who is very knowledgeable and dispenses sound advice, however, the title "nutritionist" has no professional validity. Nutritionists have no academic requirements or professional credentialing programs, so there are no limits on dispensing nutritional advice. Basically, anyone (in the U.S.) could call themselves a nutritionist, with no experience or background whatsoever. Unfortunately, the nutrition and diet industry attracts a lot of people who promote unfounded, and even dangerous solutions, because of the opportunities to make a lot of money off unsuspecting people!

Doctors typically do not have a lot of course work in nutrition, they can only do so much! While they are the only professionals who can prescribe a diet as a therapy for a disease, doctors generally refer to registered dieticians to help the patient put the diet into real life terms. Some physicians do specialize in nutrition and take their nutrition board exams, and others simply take an interest in becoming more of an expert in diet. There are very few doctors with this training out there!

Other advantages of diet designed by a dietitian...

  1. Unlike reading another self help book, using an automated online diet, or using another pre-printed diet a professional's diet will give you a plan that you can count on!  We're with you every step of the way until you reach your diet goal!

  2. Professionals can help you assess your situation - from an objective, experienced viewpoint.  They have worked with many dieters over the years and have the skills required to deal with those who have diet issues. In other words they know what works and what doesn’t!

  3. A professional can offer fresh options that you probably haven’t thought of. They can provide strategies that best help you to make the new changes you need - options that work and that fit your lifestyle.

While there are many who call themselves diet experts the diet professionals most likely to be recommended by your doctor is a registered dietitian.
